Deo Gratias

Sitting here trying to think of something new and fresh to say about Thanksgiving.  Watching some commercials about this day and about the crazy shopping on Friday.  Stores open on Thanksgiving.  Stores not open on Thanksgiving.  Door buster specials. Buy one, get one. Get an extra 20% off. Only once a year sales.  Black Friday hysteria.  Camping out in front of stores on the night before Thanksgiving.  People wrestling.

I don’t get it.

We went to the mall last Saturday just to walk, people watch, and look around.  I repeat.  I don’t get it.  Buying things just to be buying.  Spending on things that aren’t really needed.  Going into debt on credit cards for “stuff.”  Garages and basements stacked with this “stuff.”  Closets overflowing with “stuff;” some with the price tags still on them.  Having to rent storage space for extra “stuff.”

So this year I’m thankful for all the things that I am usually thankful for: family, friends, health, and hearth.  I’m also thankful for all the “stuff” I don’t have; “stuff” that I don’t have to dust or store or insure.  “Stuff” that I am not attached to and don’t really want.  And, best of all, I’m thankful that I don’t need any of this extra “stuff” to be happy.

Deo Gratias.
